How to install WordPress Starter Sites

Install a new WordPress Theme

Let’s get started with installing your brand new WordPress theme. Im going to take you through the fastest and easiest possible way to install a theme for your new blog.

For this example I’m going to use the Astra theme as its super fast and comes with great “Starter Sites”

What are Starter Sites?

Starter sites are basically a completely build website that you can install to give you a head start with your new blog. This is the fast and easy approach to building a new blog so you don’t have to spend hours trying to get your new blog to look great.

Step 1 – Install the Astra theme

Go to the Themes page inside your Admin panel and click on the “Add New” button thats at the top left of the page.

This will then take you to a Theme Search page. For this example we will go and search for the “Astra” theme.

Go ahead and click on the “Install” button. When this is done installing, The button will change to “Activate”. Click on this to activate the theme.

Step 2 – Install Starter Sites

Now we are going to install one of the Astra theme starter sites. As i mentioned before, Starter sites is just a nice and easy way of getting your blog setup quick and looking great.

Go ahead and click the “Astra Options” in the left side menu. This will take you to the theme options page.

On the right side of the page you will see the Starter Sites panel. Click on the Import tools link to start the process.

Step 3 - Setup Starter Sites on the Astra theme

Once that is done, Go to the Astra Starter Sites page. There should be a link on the left menu under Appearance.

The Astra theme has some really amazing starter sites available. Some are free and others are paid starter sites. For this tutorial im just going to select one of the Free starter sites.

Step 4 -Select your favourite starter site

Preview Starter Sites

You can click on the “Preview” button to have a look at the basic starter site and then see if it will work for what you need.

Once you have found a Starter site that could work for you, Go ahead and click the “Import Site” button at the bottom of the preview page. This will install all the required plug-ins, settings, Content and Widgets needed to make this site look like the demo.

Step 5 - Preview Starter Sites

Once the importing is done, You can view the complete starter site by clicking the “View Site” button. This will take you to the front of your new site.

Step 6 - Preview the installed Starter site

Customise your Starter theme

So let’s get going with customising your new starter site. On the left menu, go to the “Astra Options” page.

All the free options for your starter site will be listed at the top of this page and will just take you to the Theme Customisation page. So click on the upload logo link.

Step 7 - Customize your starter site

I would suggest you click around a little on this page to get familiar where everything is. This is probably the best way for you to see what is possible with your blog and what can be changed.

Theme Options

To change the logo of the site, You would have to go to – Layout / Header / Site Identity and then upload your blog logo.

Header Style

You might want to adjust the type of header you want for your blog, So you can play around with these settings by going to Layout / Header / Primary Header

The Astra theme already gives you 3 quick header options that you can play around with. Just select a different style and preview it on the right side of the page.
